I am really honored to be able to announce this collaboration with @courage_in_time
Please take a read below about Jillian and her journey.
Courage in Time is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization based in Northern New Jersey.
It was established in memory of Lorenzo Francisco Martinez, the warrior son of their founder, Jillian DeGroot.
Lorenzo was born on May 30, 2021 at 27+4 weeks due to a placenta previa complication that put his and his mama's life in danger. Lorenzo’s prematurity brought various struggles; the biggest being his lung development.
Lorenzo was settling into what would be his temporary home in NICU while his parents, Jillian and Pedro, learned everything they could about being NICU parents.
On day 10, they were informed that Lorenzo had developed an infection which localized in his left lung and became pneumonia.
He fought with courage for two more days before being called back to heaven on June 11, 2021. While Lorenzo received exceptional medical care in the NICU, Jillian and Pedro were disappointed by the lack of emotional support and guidance offered to them by Jillian’s obstetrician.
As first time parents they felt lost and unsupported in a journey they never imagined themselves on.
Jillian was so unsettled by this lack of support that she channeled her inner advocate and mama instincts to establish Courage in Time.
Professionally, Jillian is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New Jersey and holds a Doctorate in Social Work.
She now considers herself not only a full time therapist, but also a full time bereaved mama. Jillian has learned that her family is unfortunately not alone in their trauma and grief.
She is determined to celebrate Lorenzo’s life by providing courage and connection to families who endure the unthinkable loss of a child.
The mission of Courage in Time is to support families who have experienced stillbirth and neonatal loss through curated bereavement boxes, grief and postpartum resources, and connection to other bereaved families.
Courage in Time will also extend support and training into the medical community to advocate for compassionate care and the emotional needs of families like ours.
